Waking from Nightmares

Nightmares
Stealing my sacred place.
Haunting, screaming,
Shaking me awake.
Awake to face the night alone,
To shiver, to sweat,
To stare into shadows,
Search corners,
For hidden monsters,
Ghosts and ghouls.

To sense the presence
That watches me, covets me,
Threatens to possess me.

I’m scared to look,
Too scared to sleep,
I dare not close my eyes.

What spirits wait to grope my skin?
What horrors mean to ruin me?
Invade and steal my sanity,
My energy,
Molest my mind.
